Aids Conference Humbled Those Who Attended

Summary


I had never felt so small, so insignificant, but at the same time, so powerful. For one moment in my life, I was speechless as I listened to students from various HBCUs share stories of how the HIV/AIDS pandemic has affected their lives and the lives of those closest to them.

There was a girl who lost her stepfather and aunt to it. There was a mother and a father who no longer have a son to embrace. There were Hydeia and Jonathan, both in their 20s, both living with the virus. Black AIDS Institute sponsored "Mobilization Initiative" in Atlanta.

How many of you have friends who don't seem to take the threat seriously enough to protect themselves each time they lay with a new partner? How many of you know someone who still attempts to prove this manhood (or her femininity) through conquests of the opposite sex? How many of you fit this description?
