"I hope that we can have a collective wakeup call to mobilize us to action," said Carolyn M. West, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Washington, Tacoma, and author of "Violence in the Lives of Black Women: Battered, Black, and Blue."

Topics of the workshops included: "State of Emergency: Impact of Violence on Our Families," "Make Me Wanna Holla!: Violence in Our Community" and "What's Love Got to Do With it?: Intimate Partner Violence."

"I really didn't know what to expect," she said of the symposium. "I was just coming with an open mind to hear what was being said and hopefully, be able to take something back to my community. I think I have."
