National Black Justice Coalition Responds to Homophobic Black Ministers

Summary

WASHINGTON, D.C.--Some people assert that their faith or religious traditions and scripture calls them to support discrimination against gays and lesbians and to deny them the institution of marriage through an amendment to the Constitution. In our view this is neither Christian nor should it be applied to civil marriage. This is why we have separation of church and state in this country. Public policy should be rooted in the Constitution and not religious texts.

We oppose any amendment to the U.S. Constitution or to any state constitution that would unjustly exclude gay and lesbian couples from the institution of civil marriage. Any such amendment raises grave religious liberty concerns and reflects a fundamental disrespect for individual civil rights.

As ministers who serve primarily African-American congregations, we are alarmed by the disproportionate media coverage of the support by some African-American ministers for federal and state constitutional amendments to exclude gay and lesbian couples from marriage.
