Conference Helps Women Grow Their Businesses

Summary

Identifying Pittsburgh as a great city for women in business, education and the health field, television guru Geraldine Laybourne advised the lunch crowd to form partnerships and connections. Speaking from experience, she has raised one of the highest amounts of capital for any woman-owned venture, $600 million dollars to launch Oxygen Media in 2000. Her partners, prominent people in the television industry, have included Oprah Winfrey, Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner and Caryn Mandabach. She considers customers, employees and good investors as key partnerships to any business. Having a creative vision, a solid business plan and approaching people who represent you is Laybourne's formula for approaching investors. She says, "You don't need partners to start a business, you need partners to grow a business." The only woman owned and operated cable network, Oxygen was launched to fill a void in the television landscape and targeted to younger women. Laybourne spent 16 years at Nickelodeon and was president of Disney/ABC Cable Networks prior to founding Oxygen.
