"She was afraid of him and she did tell me that this wasn't the end of it; he wouldn't obey it," [Joel Dresbold] said. "It's not going to work if somebody isn't going to obey it."

[Myra Couch] said it seemed that [Alvin Starks] "was the one who was really floundering. "He didn't have a place to live, he didn't have a job."

Chris Chapman, a photographer who does some work for the New Pittsburgh Courier, was also a friend of Starks.' He said his friend "came to love" Umprhey but "didn't know how to share one-on-one the love he had for her without being abrasive."
