Dr. Gloria; Depression in Children and Teens

Summary

Depression does not discriminate. It affects all ethnic groups, all economic incomes, and all ages including children and adolescents. According to research done by the Mayo Clinic in 1998, one of 33 children and one of eight adolescents are suffering from depression. Children and adolescents with depression cannot just snap out of it. They generally need professional help. If left untreated depression can lead to academic failure, substance abuse, and suicide.

Children most at-risk for being depressed are those who have experienced a significant loss like the death of a loved one, children with learning problems, and children with behavior disorders. In many cases children with depression have a parent or other relative who is depressed. Other risk factors for depression include abuse, neglect, chronic illness, continuous exposure to violence, and trauma including natural disasters.
