Dr. Gloria; Managing Your Anger

Summary

How do you deal with your angry feelings? People use a variety of approaches to manage their anger. The three primary ways are expressing, suppressing, and calming. The healthiest way to manage angry feelings is by expressing them in an assertive, not aggressive manner. To be assertive means to be respectful of others when you state your feeling and needs. The point is to let the other person know how you feel without intentionally hurting them. A second approach is suppressing anger. The point in suppression is to hold in your anger and try to redirect all the emotion in a positive, not destructive, direction. The danger of suppression of anger is that if your anger is not allowed outward expression, it can turn inward. Anger turned inward on yourself may lead to hypertension (high blood pressure) or depression. Unexpressed anger can create another serious problem. It can lead to developing a negative, hostile attitude. People who have not learned to express their anger in a healthy way can be highly critical of others. They may become aggressive and offensive at the slightest assumed provocation.
