When the Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh presents a condensed version of Wagner's saga "Ring of the Niebelung," four African-Americans will be featured in prominent roles. The Ring is comprised of four of the most famous operas ever written-"Rhinegold," "The Valkyrie," "Siegfried" and "Twilight of the Gods."
"It's a demanding role," said [Cooper]. "My part is written for a contralto, so I'm in a lower (voice) register than what I usually sing." It helps that, like many of her cast mates, she was in the Long Beach production. "We were there for about a month," Cooper said fondly, replaying the warm Southern California weather."I take the work seriously; its not difficult to learn but is hard work," [Eugene Perry] commented. "I wouldn't consider myself a Wagnerian singer," he shared. "I'm more of a lyric singer." As did many of his fellow cast members, he was also in the Long Beach production and it doesn't hurt to hold his director in high regard.
