Epic Operatic Production Features Four Rising Stars

Summary


When the Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh presents a condensed version of Wagner's saga "Ring of the Niebelung," four African-Americans will be featured in prominent roles. The Ring is comprised of four of the most famous operas ever written-"Rhinegold," "The Valkyrie," "Siegfried" and "Twilight of the Gods."

"It's a demanding role," said [Cooper]. "My part is written for a contralto, so I'm in a lower (voice) register than what I usually sing." It helps that, like many of her cast mates, she was in the Long Beach production. "We were there for about a month," Cooper said fondly, replaying the warm Southern California weather.

"I take the work seriously; its not difficult to learn but is hard work," [Eugene Perry] commented. "I wouldn't consider myself a Wagnerian singer," he shared. "I'm more of a lyric singer." As did many of his fellow cast members, he was also in the Long Beach production and it doesn't hurt to hold his director in high regard. Eugene Perry allows "I like working with (OTP artistic director) Jonathan (Eaton)."
