Summary

Health professionals camped out at several local barbershops and beauty shops, including Willie Tee's Barber Shop in Homewood, where there were demonstrations on defibrillator use and HIV testing and the Natural Choice Salon in Oakland, among eight different establishments, providing blood pressure screenings and other services. Wade's Barbershop on Kelly Street in Homewood, had a pediatrician and the Children's Hospital mobile unit on hand to examine the children from the neighboring day care.

"Far too many African-Americans have no 'medical home' to access health care services. Therefore, in Pittsburgh we use the theme 'Take a Health Professional to the People Day,'" said Stephen B. Thomas, Ph.D., director of the CMH. "By focusing our efforts on a single day, we believe we can help generate a greater understanding of the importance of regular health screenings while at the same time focus on people who tend to have the least access to health care."

Also participating were Mark Anthony Beauty Salon and Aiken's Quality Cuts in Oakland and Easley's Unisex Salon and Hamm's Barber Shop in the Hill District, Bat's Barbershop on Penn Avenue in East Liberty and the Sittin' Pretty Salon on Centre Avenue in the Hill District, respectively.
