The NAACP Pittsburgh Unit has had a couple of lousy years. It has remained on the sidelines while shootings and other crime has decimated the African-American community. It has been silent while the late mayor Bob O'Connor forgot how to spell diversity while staffing the city. There was no effort by the NAACP when the city and county were attempting to open doors for Hurricane Katrina victims. Aside from a disjointed "Enough is Enough" rally in March, and an unsubstantiated accusation that the Pittsburgh Public Schools' plan to close 20 schools was "racist," the NAACP hasn't spoken out on anything that matters to the community.

Moss trumpeted the boast that she doubled the membership of the Pittsburgh Unit in her first year. The Pittsburgh Unit was recognized at the NAACP national convention in September for that feat. Of course, earlier that month, the national NAACP admitted that it had been inflating its membership numbers by at least 50 percent for 60 years.
