Mother Bethel Ame Relevant for 200 Years

Summary


The church is Bethel AME, the first AME Church west of the Allegheny Mountains. It was organized in 1818 in a Downtown home between 3rd and 4th Avenue by three freed men: James Coleman, George Coleman and Abraham Lewis, and it noused the first school for Blacks in Pittsburgh. A major fire destroyed it in 1845. A new church was built in the Hill District at Wylie Avenue and Elm Street in 1906.

This column is not just recognizing Bethel Church solely because of the years it has existed, because if you recall someone once said, "It is not how long you exist but rather what you accomplish during 'those years," and Mother Bethel has truly been a contributor. Bethel AME Church will officially begin their 200th anniversary celebration June 8-15 and Monday through Friday there will be a guest minister preaching every night.
