Pittsburgh City Controller

Summary

ANSWER: The most crucial thing the controller does is to give a true picture of the city's fiscal condition, which we've done with our nationally recognized annual reports. Additionally, the office examines and improves the efficiency and effectiveness of how Pittsburgh does business. We have over 150 audits of both city departments/authorities during my tenure, addressing ways to improve workflow and cost. Accurate accounting and clear audit results are how the office best serves the city.

ANSWER: First, I want to use the controller's office to create opportunities. That is the major problem with Pittsburgh; this city does not create them. secondly, I want to use audits, fiscal and performance based, as a springboard for city offices to make use of your tax dollars in an efficient and effective way. Thirdly, I want to demystify the contract bidding process to ensure more minority and women owned businesses that are qualified are able to successfully bid on government contracts which will strengthen our city's tax base.

ANSWER: One of the serious problems facing the city of Pittsburgh is its status as financially distressed. The city controller sits on the city's pension board and one of the ways we can move toward correcting this problem is addressing the problem of the city's under funded pensions. Another problem facing Pittsburgh are its schools. The city controller has audit power over the Pittsburgh Public Schools. As controller, I will make sure that the tax dollars of Pittsburghers are funding quality programs for our students and that we promote a climate of excellence in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.
