"He was a trailblazer and an activist, but he wasn't flamboyant," she said. "He was a sincere young man, always asking how you and your family were doing and always concerned about the community and the individuals in it. He was a quiet mover."

"You could call him anytime, day or night and he would help," said [George Spencer]. "He had genuine desire to see that people were treated right and he wouldn't quit until their needs were addressed. He was a servant. He was a national union officer but it was because he wanted to serve people."

"When a teacher at Lemington Elementary School continually treated us like we were less than the white kids, I remember my father going in and letting her have it," she said. "There was change. We didn't have to put up with that any more."
