Summary


Brenda Marks was hilarious as Missy while Meredith Pierce was almost too convincing as the clueless Lutiebelle. Any resemblance to Archie and "Meathead" from "All in the Family" was probably intentional on the part of Jerry Wien-and and John Palucka in their respective roles as Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee and son Charlie. Marcia L. Jones must have mixed in every stereotypical mammy she ever saw in her turn as Charlie's doting caregiver.

[Ruby Dee]'s deep, dulcet-toned voice filled the intimate Kelly-Strayhorn Theatre as she graciously thanked New Horizon Theater for inviting her to Pittsburgh and for performing her late husband's play, "Purlie Victorious." With perfect diction and incomparable grace, Dee informed the rapt audience, who welcomed her entrance with a standing ovation, that it has been 45 years since her husband wrote the play they were about to see. She then assured them that they would have a good time before slowly making her way off stage to sit in the audience and share the experience of New Horizon's performance.
