Summit Should Address Students Who Also Face Danger On Way to School

Summary

Sometimes it is as simple, and as difficult, as identifying problems before they become problems. That means that the people closest to the children must be more aware of their state of mind. It is unconscionable for students to be planning mass murder and fashioning pipe bombs and gathering other weapons in their parents' garages (as was the case in Columbine) without the parents having a clue. It is unfortunate that after yet another fatal shooting, observers can say, "Yes, he was acting kind of strange," without warning someone, anyone, who might have been able to step in and prevent the carnage.

We hope that the president's summit, while sparked by the spate of Columbine-type attacks on suburban and even rural schools, does not ignore the very real dangers faced by students in our urban schools. They didn't all of a sudden become safer, just because violence has raised its ugly head elsewhere. When the summit formulates solutions for school students' safety, it should consider ALL students, and provide the same level of resources, and concern, for students who face danger on the way to school.
