Wheatley Calls for Vote On Diversity Bill

"Right now it has no motion," said [Jake Wheatley]. "Democrats and Republicans alike have expressed an interest in rectifying the lack of diversity on this board. So, I would encourage Pittsburghers who care about this issue to write, call, fax and demand this come out of committee for a vote--without amendment."

"It doesn't say they have to appoint African-Americans or women, it just says two additional people," said Wheatley. "We had 34 co-sponsors for this bill. I would like to believe the committee chairman would give it a hearing and let it come to the floor. If not, I'll look for ways to attach it to any legislation I can think of."

"It would be dangerous for African-Americans to ever succumb to a notion where diversity is not important. It's dangerous because it sets a precedent to the majority population that it's okay for there not to be diversity. We fought too hard and too long for opportunities and seats at the table and I don't think we should soft peddle the notion for diversity on this board," she said.
